Stay Strong - Kia Kaha - motivational themed red and silver design - on a woman's black T-shirt
This woman's black T-Shirt features a spiral in reds, silvers, white and black. The design was inspired by the unfurling leaf of the New Zealand silver fern tree. Symbols of the uncurling silver fern frond are referred to as Koru in New Zealand. In the Maori tradition, the Koru represents new life, growth, strength and peace.
Kia Kaha is a well known Maori phrase. It has two common meanings. One is to "Stay Strong" (when facing challenges or difficult times); and the other is a form of comfort or sympathy to those experiencing problems or a loss.
Prince William used the term Kia Kaha in reference to the people of Christchurch after the M7.1 earthquake in 2010 (which injured 100 people, two seriously) and the devastating subsequent M6.3 earthquake which occurred in Christchurch 6 months later in 2011 (which killed 185 people and injured thousands).
Prince William used the term Kia Kaha again following the recent Mosque massacre in Christchurch (in which 50 people were killed and dozens injured.)
Kia Kaha is incorporated into the tradition and mottos of many groups in NZ (in particular the marching song of the Maori Battalion in WWII, and RNZAF 75 Squadron motto), and it is incorporated into the motto of a number of schools. It is also the name of a song, released in 1984 by the former New Zealand Rock Group called Split Enz.
The use of Kia Kaha (Stay Strong) is not limited to disasters, or to New Zealand. It is a grassroots term of encouragement and comfort under many circumstances.
