It's common to turn a blind eye to unpleasant realities. But doing so means we reduce the chance of being able to prevent or correct the consequences of those things that we do not want to think about.

Propaganda and Fake News are designed to pander to our desire to prefer reassuring lies, over potentially very disturbing truths.

In George Orwell's totalitarian Big Brother world of 1984, the subservient population were kept under oppressive control by censorship and propaganda - so that people were afraid to question Big Brothers propaganda or to think freely or face genuine reality.

In Aldus Huxley's, Brave New World, the subservient population were held in line, through technology and mood modifying drugs - so they did not feel the urge to challenge, or face reality.

This design theme is not just about personal decisions to hide our heads under a blanket to avoid reality - it's about today's totalitarian media systems (traditional and online) that hide truths from us, to prevent public demand for change.
